I love summer. Spending most days half naked on a tubing adventure down a cool Florida spring, Most importantly, enjoying an ice-cold frozen margarita in the sand. It brings me blissful sun-shining joy. While there are rightly many things to love about summer, one thing I don’t love is sun damage on my skin.
For those who don’t know, being a ginger makes sun exposure even more of an issue. Although many say we were created from fire and brimstone, and have a heated temper (which both are true), we really can’t handle more than a few minutes in the sun. Much more and UV Rays start burning our skin. We are sensitive souls on the outside. Which is why I started working on a Summer Sunburn Skin Serum. I help to prepare and protect those less fortunate souls, like myself, from sun exposure.
When I started developing this DIY sunburn-repairing serum, I wanted to do a few different things. The first was for it to rejuvenate skin after sun exposure. The second was to prepare the skin for a day on the water.
By ramping up the building blocks that create healthy skin cells, like vitamins and antioxidants, I believe this could be done. I started using this serum as a booster the day before going into the sun. I would also use it before applying sunscreen. I can’t speak for everyone but this seems to work well with my skin.
After showering off the day, and getting sand from those unspeakable areas, I’ll apply another serum coat to soothe and damage.
Now let’s talk about the ingredients.
Rose Water
Loaded with vitamin E and powerful anti-inflammatory components, rose water makes a great base for this run-repairing serum. Vitamin E is a strong moisturising agent which makes it perfect for reducing pain caused by UV rays. It also builds the foundation for skin-repairing cells.
Aloe
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, aloe can be used to help soothe and relieve burns associated with UV exposure. Aloe is deeply moisturizing for the skin. It aids in healing and reliving damage on the skin.
Vitamin C
There is a pattern to my methodology in skin care DIY recipes. I like to create skincare DIYs with essential oils and use ingredients with high concentrations of nutrients. Vitamin C is the primary nutrient I search for in ingredients because of it antioxidants. Nutrients like this are found in sweet orange essential oil and rose hip essential oil. When I first started making DIY skincare I used this. My secret is now yours.
Essential Oils:
- Germanium – One of my favorite essential oils is Germanium. Its anti-inflammatory properties are calming to damaged nerves.
- Peppermint – As a natural vasoconstrictor helping to narrow inflamed blood vessels, peppermint essential oil is helpful for pain relief.
- You may also find that you have younger-looking skin. Peppermint essential oil tightens fine lines and may decrease long-term sun-damaged skin.
- Tea Tree Oil – Tea Tree oil is an immediate burn relief agent. It may reduce blistering and peeling for those who got a little too crispy.
Warning: Too much tea tree oil may cause irritation. It’s recommended to use 5 drops when applied directly to the skin. It’s always best to dilute with distilled water first.
